A young family settling into their new living room among moving boxes, with a Canadian striped blanket on the sofa

The Canadian Edit

by Michelle Babb

A moving box is a shopping list in disguise. Here is where to fill it, from businesses that are Canadian owned and Canadian headquartered.

Why This List Exists

You buy more in the six weeks around a move than in the five years before it.

Mattress, sofa, paint, blinds, a kettle because you cannot find yours. It is the one moment when where your money goes is genuinely up for grabs.

So this is not a boycott list. It is a shopping list, kept by someone who spends her days inside other people's moves.

How a Business Makes This List

Three rules, and one admission.

01
Canadian owned

Control sits in Canada. Not a Canadian storefront reporting to a head office somewhere else.

02
Headquartered here

The decisions, and the head-office jobs, are in this country.

03
Something I would actually use

Nobody paid to be here. If it is on the list, I would send my own client.

Canadian First Does Not Mean Canadian Only

I look first for Canadian-owned businesses, then Canadian-headquartered companies, then products made or built here. Where that is not practical, I consider companies with a meaningful Canadian workforce and footprint. The goal is not purity. It is intention.

I have not personally used every business on this list. Some I know well, some were recommended by people I trust, and some are here because they are doing good work and deserve to be found. Give your patronage, your dollars and your time with discernment, the same way you would with any recommendation from a friend.

And ownership is messier than a badge on a website suggests. A familiar coffee chain can be domiciled in Toronto and still be controlled from outside the country. I check before I list, I date the list, and when I get one wrong I would rather you tell me than stay polite about it.

The List

Room by room, box by box

Curated, not comprehensive. Ontario businesses noted where it applies.

Furniture & Beds

The two purchases people regret rushing. Buy the bed first.

EQ3Winnipeg

Made-to-order upholstery, much of it built in Canada. Where I send people who want one good sofa instead of three adequate ones.

StructubeMontreal

For the guest room and the first apartment. Honest prices, no theatre.

EndyToronto

Mattress in a box, which matters more than you think when the stairwell turns.

Silk & SnowToronto

Beds and bedding both, so you can do the whole room in one order.

Paint & Hardware

The first weekend in a new place is almost always a paint weekend.

Home HardwareSt. Jacobs, Ontario

Dealer owned, Ontario headquartered, and the Beauti-Tone paint is made here. The most Canadian aisle in the country.

Canadian TireToronto

Unglamorous and completely reliable for the move-in list: bins, tools, a snow shovel before you need one.

NapoleonBarrie, Ontario

Grills, fireplaces, and heating, built an hour up the 400. A genuine Ontario manufacturer.

Kitchen & Appliances

Downsizers, this is your category. Smaller footprint, same standards.

DanbyGuelph, Ontario

Compact appliances for condos and in-law suites, run out of Guelph. The apartment-sized fridge people cannot find anywhere else.

SimonsQuebec City

Family owned since 1840. The home floor is where I would furnish a first place on a budget without it looking like one.

Clean & Care

Every seller I work with buys all of this twice.

AttitudeMontreal

Household and personal care that will not leave a staged house smelling like a hospital.

Nature CleanConcord, Ontario

Ontario made, family run, and gentle enough for a house with grandchildren in it.

The Tea, Obviously

The first thing to unpack, and the reason the kettle travels in the car.

Sloane TeaToronto

Blended in Toronto. What I bring to a closing instead of flowers.

Balzac'sAncaster, Ontario

Ontario roasted, and there is one near most of the neighbourhoods I work in. Bring the listing paperwork.

Pilot Coffee RoastersToronto

For the mornings when tea is not going to be enough.

When Canadian Is Not an Option

Then buy from the countries
that dealt with us fairly.

Some things simply are not made here. When that is true, my next choice is a country we trade with on good terms, because the better our partners do, the better we do. It is not a rule, it is a preference, and it costs nothing to hold.

And sometimes we need something from them, and that is fine. No guilt, no shame. We do our best to take care of ourselves and each other.

Know One I Have Missed?

Send it to me.

Especially trades and services in the west end: movers, cleaners, painters, window people. Those are the ones my clients ask for and the hardest to research properly.

Or email it to me directly →

Including the trades I actually call, which I do not publish, because a good electrician who gets swamped stops being a good electrician.

Ownership checked August 2026. Companies change hands, and this list will lag reality sometimes. If you spot one that has moved, tell me and I will correct it rather than quietly leave it up. See also The BLACK Edit™, a GTA directory of skills and trades.
